Confirming the recent rumors, on the 4th of June 2018, Microsoft confirmed the acquiring of coder hangout GitHub, for $7.5 billion to further enhance its cloud computing services. The deal is expected to be closed by the end of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reportedly, GitHub was reconnoitering the possibility of a potential IPO six months back but was impressed by the performance & leadership of the recent CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella, who has been pushing the company to embrace open source technology initiatives during his four years journey as the head of Microsoft. <\/span><\/p>\n

In 2015, the last value of GitHub was $2 million. It has been said that after the co-founder Chris Wanstrath’s announcement of intentions to step down, GitHub was hunting for a new CEO for the last nine months. The rumors of Microsoft sniffing around, the most widely-adopted developer tool in the world, GitHub have been in the scene since 2016, but both companies didn\u2019t respond on the deal before this. GitHub\u2019s CEO Wanstrath said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe could never have imagined this deal a decade ago when Git was a powerful but niche tool, clouds were just things in the sky, and Microsoft was a very different company.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

With its around 28 million software developers globally, GitHub is one of the world\u2019s largest developer\u2019s community. Interestingly, Microsoft was not the only one chasing GitHub, Amazon was also interested in taking over GitHub in the past. Reps from Alphabet\u2019s Google were also in a chat with the company about an acquisition in the recent weeks; according to the sources. But Microsoft\u2019s high bid was enough to keep these companies at bay. <\/span><\/p>\n

It Is Not the First Time Microsoft Has Made Such a Big Deal.<\/h3>\n

Ever since Nadella has become the CEO, the company has rapidly increased in investing in open source technology. In 2016 Microsoft’s acquisition of LinkedIn was $27 million.<\/span><\/p>\n
