Vanity Metric

[van-i-tee me-trik]

A vanity metric is a measurable quantity that can be assessed but cannot drive impressive results. These analytics appear amazing but do not provide any meaningful business analytics.

Vanity metrics are simple to measure, and it is pretty easy to fall into their trap. They lack substance and are often misleading. The number of likes, followers, and comments falls in the category of vanity metrics, as they provide very little insight of the relationship between the business and its goals.

Example

Raw page views, downloads, and the number of total running customers are a few examples of vanity metrics.
