What is Facebook engagement rate?

Facebook engagement rate is the percentage of a Page's followers (or post reach) who interact with a Facebook post through reactions, comments, shares, and clicks. It is the single most useful Page health metric, because raw Page-like counts have been gameable for over a decade and only reach + engagement actually predict business outcomes.

There is a catch unique to Facebook: organic reach is throttled. The Facebook algorithm has prioritized friends-and-family content over Page posts since 2018, meaning most Page followers never see most posts. A Facebook Page with 100,000 likes might only reach 4,000 followers per post. This makes follower-based ER misleading on Facebook in a way it isn't on other platforms.

Why it matters

On Facebook, reach-based ER is usually the more honest metric. A Page with a 0.4% follower-based ER but 8% reach-based ER is performing well — its content engages, the algorithm just isn't distributing it widely. Calculate both, then judge.

Why track Facebook engagement rate instead of just Page likes?

Page-like counts have been inflated by paid like campaigns, bot accounts, and historical follow-without-engaging behavior. Engagement rate normalizes for all of that. It also lets you compare:

  • Your Page over time. Are your followers still engaged as organic reach drops?
  • Different post formats. Native video vs. link posts vs. photos vs. text.
  • Yourself vs. competitors. Even with fewer Page likes you can win on engagement.

The Facebook engagement rate formula

The standard Facebook engagement rate formula adds up all interactions a post receives and divides by Page likes. Facebook counts all six reaction types as a single engagement each, plus comments, shares, and post clicks.

Facebook ER = Reactions + Comments + Shares + ClicksPage Likes × 100
Worked example: A Page post gets 320 reactions, 28 comments, 15 shares, and 47 post clicks. Total engagements = 410. The Page has 18,000 likes.

410 ÷ 18,000 × 100 = 2.28% engagement rate. Excellent for a Facebook Page at that size.

Dividing engagements by reach (unique accounts that saw the post) tells you how compelling the content actually is to people who saw it — independent of Facebook's distribution throttling. This is the version that fairly represents content quality.

What is a good engagement rate on Facebook?

A good Facebook Page engagement rate is anything above 1 percent by Page likes, or above 5 percent by reach. Facebook benchmarks are dramatically lower than other platforms because of organic reach throttling — what would be a low ER on Instagram is excellent on Facebook.
