How X counts a post
Every link costs 23
X shortens each link to a fixed length before counting, so a 200-character URL and a 20-character one cost exactly the same.
Some characters cost two
Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew and most Indic scripts cost one. Chinese, Japanese, Korean and emoji cost two, so 140 of those fills a post.
An emoji counts once
A family emoji is several code points joined together. X counts it as one emoji, and so does this tool.

How many characters is an X post?
A standard post is 280 weighted characters. X Premium raises that to 25,000. Weighted matters, because not every character costs the same.
Why does my link count as 23 characters?
X shortens every link before counting it, so a link costs exactly 23 characters no matter how long the actual URL is. A 200-character URL and a 20-character one cost the same.
Why do some characters count as two?
X gives most Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew and Indic characters a weight of one, and everything else a weight of two. That means Chinese, Japanese, Korean and emoji cost two each, so roughly 140 of them fills a post.
How are emoji counted?
As one emoji, costing two. A family emoji is made of several code points joined together, and a plain character count would score it as five or eight. X counts the whole thing once, and so does this tool.
