Character Count

[ kar-ik-ter kount ]

Character count is the number of characters that you have typed into a document or text box. This includes letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation. It is used to track the length of the text to ensure that a document meets the requirements of a specific format.

In social media, the character count is the number of characters that a user can enter into a single post or message. On platforms such as Twitter, which has a limit of 140 characters, users must be concise in order to get their message across. Other platforms such as Facebook have a much higher character limit, giving users more freedom to express themselves. While character count may seem like a small thing, it can actually be quite important in the world of social media.

Platform Standard Character Limit Cut Off Limit Notes
X 280 characters (Free) / 25,000 characters (Premium) Truncates at 280 characters for Premium users in the main feed. Spaces, punctuation, and links (always count as 23 characters) consume the count.
Instagram 2,200 characters 125 characters While you have a lot of room, anything past the first 125 characters gets hidden behind the “… more” link.
Facebook 63,206 characters ~400 characters Perfect for storytelling, but the main feed truncates long paragraphs quickly depending on line breaks.
LinkedIn 3,000 characters (Personal & Business posts) ~140 characters Headlines are capped at 220 characters; profile summaries allow up to 2,600 characters.
TikTok 4,000 characters (Video captions) ~150 characters Upgraded heavily from older limits to allow for much stronger in-app SEO keyword optimization.
Threads 500 characters No truncation Allows native link embedding and up to 5 minutes of video within the 500-character post window.
Pinterest 500 characters (Description) / 100 characters (Title) ~50-60 characters The first 30–35 characters of your title and first 50–60 of your description show up in the main grid feed.

Example

For example, a tweet on Twitter must be under 140 characters in order to be sent.
