01 · The basics

What is Instagram engagement rate?

Instagram engagement rate is the percentage of an account's followers (or reach) who interact with a post through likes, comments, shares, and saves. It is the most reliable signal of how well your content is performing, because the Instagram algorithm uses early engagement to decide whether a post deserves wider distribution through the Explore feed and the Reels recommendation system.

Two accounts with the same follower count can have wildly different ROI. A creator with 20,000 followers and a 5 percent engagement rate generates more meaningful interactions than a celebrity with 2 million followers and a 0.3 percent rate. That is exactly why brands hire micro-influencers. They often punch far above their weight when you actually check their Instagram engagement rate.

Why it matters

Instagram's algorithm prioritizes posts based on engagement velocity in the first 30 to 60 minutes after publishing. A high engagement rate does not just measure performance. It actively drives future reach. The flywheel compounds.

Why track engagement rate instead of just likes?

Raw engagement numbers favor accounts with large audiences. A post with 1,000 likes sounds impressive until you find out the account has 2 million followers (a 0.05 percent ER). Engagement rate normalizes performance so you can compare:

  • Your account over time. Is your audience still engaged as you grow?
  • Different content formats. Are Reels outperforming carousels?
  • Yourself vs. competitors. Even if they have 10x your followers, you can still win on ER.
  • Influencer ROI. A 5 percent ER on 50K followers often beats a 0.5 percent ER on 1M.
02 · The formula

The Instagram engagement rate formula

The standard Instagram engagement rate formula is straightforward. And unlike most other platforms, saves count. They are one of the strongest signals to the Instagram algorithm, because they indicate value worth returning to.

Instagram ER = Likes + Comments + Shares + SavesFollowers × 100
Worked example: A post gets 800 likes, 45 comments, 30 shares, and 25 saves. That is 900 total engagements. The account has 15,000 followers.

900 ÷ 15,000 × 100 = 6% engagement rate. That is excellent for Instagram.

Two other ways to calculate engagement rate on Instagram

Depending on what you are measuring, you may want a more accurate view than the standard formula gives. Our Instagram engagement rate calculator supports all three.

Engagement rate by reach (ERR)

Most followers never see most of your posts. Calculating against reach (unique accounts that actually saw the post) shows how compelling your content really is to viewers who landed on it.

IG ER (by reach) = Total engagementsReach × 100

Engagement rate by impressions

The strictest measure. Use it when comparing organic vs. paid Instagram posts side by side, because impressions count every view (one user can rack up multiple).

IG ER (by impressions) = Total engagementsImpressions × 100
03 · Benchmarks

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

A good engagement rate on Instagram is anything above 3 percent. But "good" depends heavily on account size. Smaller accounts almost always beat the average. Mega-accounts settle near the bottom.

Average engagement rate on Instagram by follower count

Here is the average engagement rate on Instagram broken down by account size. Use it to see whether your account is over- or under-performing for its tier.

Industry average

Across all Instagram accounts, the overall average engagement rate hovers around 1 to 3 percent. The most cited benchmark is 1.94 percent for non-Reels content. Reels skew much higher.

04 · Content formats

Reels vs. posts vs. carousels: which gets the most engagement?

Not all Instagram content formats are equal. Average engagement rates vary dramatically depending on whether you are posting a Reel, a single image, a carousel, or a Story. Here is the stack as of 2026.

Reels lead the pack. They typically see 2 to 3 times the engagement of static feed posts. The Instagram algorithm currently favors Reels heavily, pushing them onto the Explore page and into the Reels feed of non-followers. If you want to improve your Instagram engagement rate, the fastest lever is shifting more content to Reels.

Carousels punch above their weight, too. Instagram serves them up twice (once for slide 1, again for slide 2 if the user scrolled past). They drive saves at a higher rate than single images, especially educational or tutorial content.

05 · How to

How to check engagement rate on Instagram

Whether you want to check your own Instagram engagement rate or vet a creator before working with them, the process is the same. Six steps, two minutes.

1

Open Instagram Insights

For your own account, tap a recent post then "View insights." You will see likes, comments, shares, and saves. (Business or Creator accounts only.)

2

Pull the numbers

Note down likes, comments, shares, and saves. For account-level ER, do this for the last 9 to 12 posts and average the result.

3

Get your follower count

For the most accurate per-post ER, use the follower count at the time the post was published. Recent posts can use your current count.

4

Use the Instagram engagement checker

Enter the numbers above. The tool calculates ER instantly and tells you where you stand on the Instagram benchmark scale.

5

Repeat per format

Calculate engagement rate separately for Reels, carousels, and feed posts. You will spot which format works best for your audience.

6

Track over time

One number is a snapshot. Track weekly for trends, or let Social Champ Analytics do it automatically.

Checking someone else's Instagram engagement rate

To check engagement rate on an Instagram account that is not yours (vetting an influencer, for example), use the public post engagement count. Likes and comments are visible to anyone. Shares and saves are not public, so your calculation will skew slightly low, but it is still directionally accurate. Average across their last 10 to 12 non-promotional posts for a clean read.

06 · Growth tactics

How to improve Instagram engagement rate

If your Instagram engagement rate is lower than you would like, the fix is not posting more. It is posting smarter. Seven tactics that consistently move the needle:

1

Shift to Reels

The single fastest way to lift your Instagram ER. Reels see 2 to 3 times the engagement of static posts and get pushed to non-followers.

2

Design for saves

Saves are weighted heaviest. "Save this for later" prompts, educational carousels, and resource lists drive saves reliably.

3

Hook in 0.5 seconds

Reels live or die on the first frame. Bold text overlays, sharp questions, or pattern interrupts beat slow openings every time.

4

Reply in the first hour

Every reply you make in the first 60 minutes counts as engagement and signals to the algorithm that the post is sparking conversation.

5

Post when followers are online

Check Instagram Insights, Audience, Most active times. Posting at peak gets engagement velocity, which the algorithm rewards.

6

Ask in your caption

Open-ended questions reliably drive comments. Comments outweigh likes by 3 to 4x in algorithmic weight.

7

Stay consistent

The Instagram algorithm rewards predictability. Use Social Champ's Instagram scheduler to keep cadence steady without burnout.

08 · FAQ

Instagram engagement rate questions, answered

The Instagram engagement rate formula is (Likes + Comments + Shares + Saves) divided by Followers, multiplied by 100. For a single post, add up engagements on that post and divide by your follower count at the time of posting. For account-level ER, average across your last 9 to 12 posts. Our free Instagram engagement rate calculator handles this instantly.
The average engagement rate on Instagram is between 1 and 3 percent depending on account size. Accounts under 10K followers average 4 to 8 percent. Accounts over 1M typically see 0.5 to 1.5 percent. The most cited industry benchmark is around 1.94 percent across all account sizes.
A good engagement rate on Instagram is anything above 3 percent. Between 3 and 6 percent is strong. Above 6 percent is excellent. Micro-influencers in the 10K to 100K range often hit 4 to 8 percent, which is why brands pay them premium rates per follower compared to celebrities.
The standard Instagram engagement rate formula is (Likes + Comments + Shares + Saves) divided by Followers, multiplied by 100. For per-post accuracy, swap followers for reach: (Total Engagements divided by Reach) multiplied by 100. Both formulas are supported in our calculator above.
To check engagement rate on Instagram, open Instagram Insights for the post (Business or Creator accounts only), pull the likes, comments, shares, and saves, then divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. Our free Instagram engagement checker does this in seconds. Just enter the numbers.
Yes. Saves count toward Instagram engagement rate, and the Instagram algorithm weighs them heavily. A save signals strong value because the user wants to come back to the post. Always include saves in your Instagram engagement calculation, especially for educational posts and carousels where saves often outpace likes.
Yes. Reels see 2 to 3 times higher engagement rates than static feed posts on average. Instagram's algorithm currently favors short-form video and pushes Reels to non-followers through Explore and the Reels feed, which dramatically boosts both reach and engagement.
Engagement rate by followers divides total engagements by total followers. It is the standard metric for tracking account health over time. Engagement rate by reach divides engagements by the number of unique accounts that actually saw the post. Reach-based ER is more accurate per post, because most followers never see most posts.
Engagement rate naturally drops as accounts grow. A 5 percent ER at 1K followers often becomes 1 percent at 100K. Other causes include algorithm changes, posting at off-peak times, content fatigue, and inactive followers. Focus on growing reach and absolute engagement numbers alongside your rate.
